Every four minutes…

Someone dies of lung cancer every 4 minutes!

Most recent numbers show 130,180 Americans died of lung cancer in one year. That staggering number shows why lung cancer is the highest cancer related cause of death today, and why research is needed to decrease this number.

130,180 deaths in a year means 357 people die of lung cancer every day. That translates into 15 people dying every hour and 1 person dying every 4 minutes.

To put that into day to day events, a person dying from lung cancer every four minutes means:

2 people die in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette (average time to smoke a cigarette 7 minutes)

4 people die in the time it takes to watch Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. (Video length 13:42)

4 to 8 people die in the average time for a nap (average 15 to 30 minutes)

11 people die in the time it takes to commute to work in NYC (average NYC work commute is 41.4 minutes)

15 people die in the time it takes on average to do a load of laundry (average 60 minutes to wash)

33 people die in the time it takes on average for the modern Hollywood movie (average length of time for top ten highest grossing movies 130.9 minutes). Unless you watch Gone with the Wind (3 hours 58 minutes) in which case 60 people will die of lung cancer.

95 people die in the time it takes to fly from New York to Los Angeles (average flight time 6 hours 17 minutes).

120 people die during the typical 8 hour work day.

Research improves outcomes and is desperately needed here.
