Every 2 minutes and 12 seconds…Lung Cancer Diagnosis!

Every 2 minutes and 12 seconds, or every 132 seconds, someone receives the diagnosis of lung cancer. This diagnosis creates a lot of angst in the patient and their families/friends. This diagnosis disrupts their life in ways unaffected observers cannot comprehend. Many lung cancer patients don’t know that there is help beyond the clinical treatments for the cancer. Most programs now have psychosocial assistance including psychologists, whole health specialists and physical and occupational therapists who help treat the entire person and not just the cancer. No one deserves to be diagnosed with lung cancer but neglecting the patient’s mental health during this stressful time is linked to worse outcomes. If you are diagnosed with lung cancer, make sure you are receiving all of the help you deserve by fighting lung cancer using treatments for your entire body.

Smoking cessation, lung cancer screening, immunotherapy, targeted chemotherapy, improved radiation therapy including stereotactic body radiation therapy have made marked improvements in both reducing lung cancer’s incidence and mortality, but there's more to do. Let’s remember to treat the person as well as the lung cancer for best results.
